Lovely ladies! And all friends of IWK!

Following our now traditional agenda for our Christmas Coffee Morning, our December 22 event included both a quiet time of reflection and also a joyful time of singing and dancing.

The first part of our Coffee Morning was devoted to a short talk by Betsy Colford on the different perceptions of time and of the meaning of “time” in earlier historical periods and in the present. Mythological time, or the earliest conception of time, was based on the “cycle” of the same events, both seasonal and spiritual.

This concept of time is also divided into the “sacred” time of the beginning (mythological time) and the “profane” time in which we live. The only “real” time is the sacred time of the origin of all things, and the way to participate in this real time is to follow certain rites and rituals according to the cycle and the seasons.

Apart from cyclical time, there is also “chronological” time, a gift from the early Israelites, who saw time not as an endless repetition of the same events, but as a forward-moving path leading to a better physical and spiritual life on earth. Future brought with it positive progress to benefit people as they progressed toward the final unfolding of happiness and fulfillment.

Following this talk, we each reflected on our life in 2012. This exercise, “Year-End Reflection Time” had been led twice by Mrs. Paula Fujiwara, who was unable to guide us this year because she was in the final stages of preparing her dissertation for the Doctor of Ministry degree at the CheongShim Graduate School of Theology.

Our personal reflection time followed two steps. First, we realized the negative ways of thinking that were holding us back from becoming all that we can be in our personal life and in our relationships with others. Accompanied by calming music, we then wrote on strips of paper these negative thoughts that we wanted to eliminate from our life. We later, one after the other, burned these strips of paper, signifying that these negative elements are now past and gone from our life.

The next step was to write on beautifully decorated stationery the resolutions we determined to fulfill in 2013. The new determinations we each made for ourselves were “doable” thoughts and actions that we believed necessary for a more positive mindset and lifestyle in the new year. We kept these letters of affirmation for ourselves, to look at often, and to chart the progress of our future internal growth.

After our reflection and meditation time we enjoyed a light lunch prepared by our set-up team of Lucilla Gray and her daughter Naomi, Hyun-Sook Grice, Mina Azhari and the enthusiastic Brandner family, including In Keng, Azalea, Crysantha, Jason and Ian. The set-up team had also prepared beforehand the bright Christmas tree and wall decorations that gave this Coffee Morning its holiday glow.

Feeling full and happy after lunch, we settled into our chairs for the singing of several traditional Christmas carols. We were delighted to welcome back Mrs. Angelika Birdsong and Mrs. Yitka Ecsedi and their energetic daughters for an encore performance of song, dance and joyful dance improvisation. Led by Angelika and Yitka on guitars, we progressed through many traditional Christmas carols.

Not wanting to end our cheerful time with one another, we continued our celebration by dancing in our own way to the music of Angelika and Yitka, and were delighted when the many children of our members and guests spontaneously performed for us in the middle of our circle of dance.

We thank you for your participation in our Coffee Mornings in 2012 and look forward to seeing your bright smiles when we meet again in 2013. Please join us on January 26 for a talk comparing the countries of Italy and Korea by Prof. Maria Adorno of Sogang University.

Until then, may you enjoy all the blessings of this new year and new beginning!
