유엔 남녀평등권 실현을 주요활동으로 하고 있는 제55차 UN 여성지위위원회(CSW)가 2011년 2월 22일부터 3월 4일까지 뉴욕 UN본부에서 “여성들의 일자리 창출 및 교육과 평등고용에 대하여" 라는 주제로 개최되었다.

세계평화여성연합 UN지부는 파키스탄 여성 변호사 협회와 공동 후원으로 "과학 기술 분야 여성들의 교육 개선" 과 “여성의 과학기술 교육 및 적극적 참여를 위한 NGO의 역할” 이라는 주제로 유엔 쳐치 센터에서 병행 워크숍을 주최하였다.

100여명이 참석한 가운데 진행된 병행 워크숍은 보니 베리 대표(여성연합 유엔)의 사회로 케냐 Handow 부설학교 프로젝트 담당 모리 사치코 국장, 컴젠 프로젝트의 창시자인 기타 반지라(벨뷰대학 미생물학자), 릴리 린 회장(대만 여성 연합회의 국가 동맹), 카렌 제이 스미스 부의장(범죄예방 및 형사 행정학 NGO연합)의 현장 활동에 대한 연설로 진행되었다.

또한 이어서 UN본부 외교관 룸에서 제 55차 여성 지위위원회를 기념하기 위한 특별 런천 미팅을 가졌다.

모토코 수기야마 국장 (여성연합 UN사무국)의 사회로 시작한 런천미팅은 다니엘 안토니오 대사(모잠비크 공화국)의 개회사에 이어 문난영 세계회장(여성연합)은 환영사, 안드레이 아브라모브 대표(UN NGO 위원회)의 초청특강으로 진행되었다.

문난영 회장은 “21세기는 여성의 시대뿐만 아니라 또한 정보화 시대이며, 여성의 리더십과 여성의 고유의 특성을 가지고 사회에 집중된 남성 리더십과의 조화를 이루어야 한다”고 환영사를 통해 강조하였으며, 이어 새로 부임한 안드레이 아브라모브 대표(UN NGO 위원회)의 “여성과 소녀를 위한 과학기술 교육의 효과적 접근성을 위한 NGO의 역할” 이라는 주제로 특별초청 강연을 했다.

함께한 지도자들은 이 시간을 통해서 여성들의 과학 기술 분야의 참여 확대 및 환경개선을 위하여 NGO와 정부가 함께 아이디어와 전략을 공유하며 노력해야한다고 입을 모았다.

The 55th Commission on the Status of Women WFWP Events

The 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on “Access and Participation of Women and Girls to Education, Training, Science and Technology, including for the Promotion of Women’s Equal Access to Full Employment and Decent Work” was held from February 22 to March 4, 2011, at UN Headquarters, NY.

The WFWP UN Office held a parallel event workshop on "Improving Education for Women and Girls in Science and Technology" on Feb. 23, 2011, at the UN Church Center, New York.

About a hundred people attended. Ms. Bonnie Berry, a WFWP UN Representative, was moderator and the speakers were Ms. Sachiko Mori, Vice Project Director, WFWP School Project in Kenya, Dr. Gita Bangera, Microbiologist and Instructor at Bellevue College, Bellevue, WA, Founder of the ComGen Project, Authentic Research Experiences for Undergraduate Students, Ms. Lily Lin, President, National Alliance of Taiwan Women’s Association, and Ms. Karen J Smith, Vice Chair, The Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

Right after the event, WFWP International held its annual luncheon meeting on the theme of “The Role of NGO in the Access and Participation of Women and Girls to Education, Training, Science and Technology” to Commemorate the 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, at the Delegate Dining Room, UNHQ, NY.

Around sixty guests consisting of WFWP leaders, constituents, and CSW delegates from Japan, Taiwan, and the USA attended. The event was graced by the guest speaker, Mr. Andrei Abramov, Chief, NGO Branch, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Office for the ECOSOC Support and Coordination, and His Excellency Mr. Daniel Antonio, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Mozambique to the United Nations.

Ms. Motoko Sugiyama, VP and Director of WFWPI UN Office as well as host and organizer of the luncheon meeting, was the program moderator. Prof. Lan Young Moon Park, president of WFWP International, delivered heart-warming remarks stating that the 21st century is the age of information and technology as well as the era of women.

After lunch the guest speaker Mr. Andrei Abramov spoke on the role of NGOs in access to and participation of women and girls in education, training, science and technology. The participants expressed with a single voice that NGOs and government have to try together and share their ideas and strategy with one another to help expand women's participation and increase their participation in science and technology.
